Re: Recommendation letter for Vasily Ivanov

I have known Vasily Ivanov since Spring 2001, when he came to our chair and completed my course in Knowledge Management. In addition, in Fall 2002 I was on the examination board of the oral defence of his M.S. thesis completed in Singapore. Subsequently, I was also involved in some of his research efforts. Ever since I have known him, Vasily has always impressed me as a person who is ambitious, industrious, and seriously interested and enthusiastic about computer graphics.

As an undergraduate, Vasily did a strong, self-initiated, and sophisticated project on computer graphics, which won a departmental award. Moreover, he also built and headed a winning team to participate in several collegiate programming contests and completed advanced courses in computer science at the Institute for System Programming of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In the course I taught, Vasily proved to be an enthusiastic and outstanding student. During the semester, he showed special interest in the course and I pointed him to a few research papers relating to the course content. Some time later, Vasily produced two brilliant reports containing a concise analytical review of the papers.

We gladly admitted Vasily to our chair when a few vacancies for the graduate student exchange with Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) became available. He impressed us with his keen interest in computer graphics and computer science. In his master’s thesis, Vasily demonstrated that he has an excellent working knowledge of computational mathematics and computer science, and is highly proficient in computer engineering. His project was devoted to the application of adaptive meshes to cloth simulation. Vasily implemented a sophisticated cloth simulation framework and generated extremely impressive animations. His thesis demonstrates a thorough grasp of the cloth simulation field, clearly presents the novel method proposed, is well structured and written in good English.

Vasily is immensely committed to research work. After graduation he put a great deal of effort into developing and writing up his research and ideas. He worked very hard and mostly independently – within a few months he had obtained additional results, written up a paper, and successfully had it published at the prestigious IEEE Visualization 2003. He has shown not only that he is able to work to strict deadlines by good time management, but also a willingness to put in the necessary hard work.

In summary, Vasily is diligent, confident, and strongly motivated towards a career in computer graphics. I have also always known him to be a friendly, helpful and responsible person. I consider him to be one of the most exemplary students I have ever taught, and I believe Vasily has excellent prospects as a graduate student. I recommend him with no reservations.

Sincerely,

Dr. Vladimir Petrov
